AAIC 2021 | Bringing plasma biomarkers into clinical practice: what does the future hold?

Nicholas Ashton, PhD, The Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden, shares his thoughts on the future role of blood-based biomarkers in clinical practice. A meaningful body of evidence has accumulated to support the use of plasma biomarkers for screening, diagnosis, prognostication, and monitoring. However, further investigation is needed to fully understand how these markers can be introduced clinically. Dr Ashton notes that novel plasma biomarkers should not be used as a stand-alone technique, but in combination with other validated assessments. This interview took place during the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) 2021.
