ARUK 2018 | The link between the gut microbiome and the blood-brain barrier

A lot of gut microbiota work has been focused on the link with obesity and cardiovascular health; however, the known link between diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease risk indicates that the gut microbiota also affects the brain. In this interesting interview, Lesley Hoyles, PhD, CBiol, MRSB, of Imperial College London, London, UK, explains what is known about the link between the gut microbiome and the brain, with questions of what impact long-term exposure to high levels of certain gut-derived metabolites has. Dr Hoyles highlights the importance of investigating the gut-liver-brain system. She also discusses the challenges of conducting this type of research and her plans for further study in this area. This video was recorded at the Alzheimer’s Research UK Conference 2018, held in London, UK.
