AAN 2022 | Therapeutic potential of HDL and APOE in Alzheimer’s disease

The APOE4 gene is one of the strongest genetic predictors of Alzheimer’s disease, and one biological mechanism behind this relates to High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL). The ability of HDL (a.k.a. cholesterol) to exchange lipids in the brain is diminished in people with the APOE4 gene. Hussein Yassine, MD, Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, explains the biological mechanisms by which the induction of ATP-binding cassette 1 (ABCA1) could lead to the creation of more healthy HDL in the brains of people with APOE4. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology 2022 Congress in Seattle, WA.
