AAIC 2022 | Ageism in the healthcare system

‘A healthcare system is only as good as how it takes care of its most vulnerable’. Sharon K. Inouye, MD, MPH, Hebrew SeniorLife / Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, talks on the issue of ageism in the healthcare system and why healthy aging needs to be a global priority. For example, older adults can often present with atypical disease symptoms that go unrecognized by healthcare professionals due to lack of awareness. In this way, many treatable conditions can be missed and left to progress. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic helped to raise awareness of the issue, as well as highlighting the lack of prioritization given to those living in nursing homes or assisted living facilities. Prof. Inouye hopes we can turn awareness into action to address the issues caused by ingrained ageism. This interview took place at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) 2022 in San Diego, CA.
