EAN 2022 | Management needs of patients with dementia: sleep disorders & hip fractures

Kristian Steen Frederiksen, MD, PhD, FEBN, Danish Dementia Research Centre, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, Denmark, shares highlights and the latest developments in the field of dementia. There has been a lot of research looking at the management needs that can be addressed in patients with dementia, while no disease-modifying therapies are available. A study on the impact of sleep disorders following stroke concerning cognitive impairment showed that treating sleep disorders might benefit the cognitive function of patients. Another study was conducted in Sweden evaluating the impact of hip fractures in patients with dementia, and the results clearly showed increased mortality in patients with dementia who had a hip fracture. Blood-based biomarkers are also being investigated in multiple studies and show promising results. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) 2022 Congress in Vienna, Austria.
