AAN 2022 | Importance of working with patients and families to improve quality of life for people with dementia

Julio Rojas-Martinez, MD, PhD, University of California San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, talks about the many people who are involved in the life and care of a person with dementia. ‘Social-level personalized medicine’ involves getting to know where a patient lives, who interacts with them, and who is involved in their daily life in order to provide them with the best care. This can, unfortunately, take a lot of time, which can make it difficult to do in a fast-paced healthcare system. Dr Rojas-Martinez emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, of whom neurologists are only a small part. Care navigators, who have been a successful part of the team for patients with cancer, are now being trialed for patients with dementia, helping them and their families to find the right resources without having to wait to speak to their doctors. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology 2022 Congress in Seattle, WA.
