ARUK 2023 | Connecting diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease

Fiona McLean, PhD, University of Dundee, Dundee, UK, shares an overview of what we understand about the overlap between obesity and diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2D) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Epidemiological and biological studies have established these lifestyle factors as significant determinants of AD risk. Numerous mechanisms are thought to underly their connection, including changes in brain glucose metabolism, insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, inflammation, autophagy dysfunction, and hyperamylinemia. The impact of diet on the gut microbiome may also be an important factor in this complex relationship. This interview took place at the Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) Conference 2023 in Aberdeen, UK.
