CONy 2023 | The concept of Alzheimer’s disease

Amos Korczyn, MD, Tel Aviv University, Tev Aviv, Israel, discusses the designation of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). A central issue is not only how one defines AD but how to define disease in general. The definition of a disease incorporates, firstly and most importantly, an etiology and a pathogenic process. The etiology of AD is unknown, except for a small minority of patients with a genetic background. Notably, the clinical criteria of AD define a syndrome, and the pathological criteria are also a syndrome. Therefore, AD should not be considered a “”disease”” but rather a combination of clinical and pathological syndromes. This interview took place at the 17th World Congress on Controversies in Neurology (CONy) in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
