ARUK 2023 | Prioritizing research into obesity and diabetes as dementia risk factors

Fiona McLean, PhD, University of Dundee, Dundee, UK, comments on the lack of awareness about obesity and diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2D) as significant risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Epidemiological studies suggest that T2D increases AD risk by up to 60%. Evidence from pathway analyses, genomics, and metabolomics indicate a multilevel connection between these diseases. However, much remains unknown about the fundamental science underlying this association. There is a need for increased research efforts on metabolic changes in cognitive decline, the impact of insulin resistance on the brain, and the peripheral mechanisms involved in AD. A deeper understanding of this connection could identify novel risk biomarkers and targets for intervention. This interview took place at the Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) Conference 2023 in Aberdeen, UK.
